5G – How will it affect businesses?

5G is the 5th generation of mobile wireless systems.

Some of the key features of 5G are:

  • It is roughly 10-20 times faster than 4G.
  • It can send and receive more data, which means faster data download and upload speeds.
  • Uses less power.
  • It has a wider range of coverage.
  • More stable connections.
  • Enables more devices to access the mobile internet at the same time.

In terms of general business applications, 5G will play a big part in the advancement of driverless cars and the way in which drones can be used. 5G will enable driverless cars to β€˜talk’ to each other and report back to traffic management systems. Drones can be used to carry out search & rescue missions, fire assessments, and traffic monitoring – communicating wirelessly with each other and ground base stations over 5G networks.

5G in manufacturing

5G technologies provide the network characteristics essential for manufacturing. Low latency and high reliability are needed to support critical applications. The mobile 5G technology will allow for higher flexibility, lower cost, and shorter lead times for factory floor production reconfiguration, layout changes, and alterations.

5G has the potential to reduce downtime by using analysed data. 5G connected sensors can channel real-time information about machine/equipment performance. When combined with machine learning algorithms, this data can help a business predict when expensive equipment is about to fail.
